American Express Hilton Surpass Card

*Updated May 7, 2013*

For those who already hold the American Express Hilton Card, there's another card that might be worth considering. The Amex Hilton Surpass Card offers an additional 50k bonus Hilton HHonors points to existing Hilton cardholders and offers complimentary Hilton Gold status for the first year of cardmembership. For new cardmembers, there is a 60k offer available here. It should be noted though that this card also has a $75 annual fee attached which makes this offer a bit less appealing.

The other key difference is the addition of the free priority pass membership which allows access to over 600 airport lounges (but keep in mind you still need to pay a $27 day fee for usage).

While the earn rate is fairly similar to the standard Hilton Amex, the main difference is the 12 HHonors points per $1 spent at Hilton. So unless you are a heavy spender at Hilton hotels (enough to justify the $75 annual fee), I wouldn't really recommend this card unless you need the 60k bonus points.

Here's a list of some of the other benefits this card offers:
  • Free 40k points after first purchase
  • Free 20k points after spending $3k within 90 days
  • (Free 50k points after spending $3k within 90 days of upgrading for those with the Amex Hilton)
  • Complimentary Hilton Gold Status for first year of cardmembership
  • Free Priority Pass membership ($99 value)
  • Hilton Gold Status after $20k yearly spend
  • Hilton Diamond Status after $40k yearly spend
  • 12 HHonor points per $1 spend at Hilton hotels
  • 6 HHonor points per $1 spend (for supermarkets/gas/restaurants categories)
  • 3 HHonor points per $1 spend on everything else
  • $75 annual fee
  • As I've pointed out here before, I believe Hilton Honors points to still be valuable (post-devaluation) for free night award redemptions even now, so if you're just missing a few points, this might actually make sense to get depending on your personal situation.

  • There is also a separate 60k HHonors offer available to those who have never had the basic version of the card (40k on first purchase and 20k after $3k spend) here.  But I would definitely recommend considering the regular Hilton Amex card over the Surpass card if you don't already have that.

  • Disclaimer: This card is only available to US residents.  Also, I am not paid by American Express to endorse their products.
